Art and Design

Intent

At Southwood Infant School, we meet the requirements of the national curriculum in art – and much, much more!

The aim of our art curriculum is to ensure that every child who leaves Southwood is inspired, confident and reflective. The following experiences are offered to children in art – painting, printmaking, collage, drawing, sculpture and construction. Work in art is usually linked to the class topic for the term. The skills needed to work in all these areas are developed as the children progress through the school. They record what has been experienced, observed and imagined, they experiment with tools and techniques, they explore pattern, texture, colour, line, tone, space and form. They also review and reflect on their own and others’ work.

Children are introduced to the work of artists, crafts people and designers from a variety of cultures from the past and present. Local artists are invited into school. Looking at the work of different artists may act as an inspiration to children for their own work.

Implementation

The photos below show some of the amazing work the children achieve at Southwood Infant School during our Indian Arts Week June 2019.

Thank you to all the parents who popped in to view the children’s art work. We had 96 visitors and the children really enjoyed sharing the work from the week. There really was some exceptional art work on display. Thank you to the amazing Southwood team for mounting and displaying all the lovely work.

Here are some of your comments:

“Our daughter loved art week and very much enjoyed the theme. She was very excited showing us what she had done, as well as telling us what she had done during the week (dancing and food tasting). She also made a new friend when she was doing art work in a different class. Thank you for a good week.”

My son had a fabulous week, in fact he said it was the best week and couldn’t wait to see what the next day was. It is fabulous idea, art work was fantastic. Also such lovely ideas of what to do throughout the week. Well done all fabulous.”

Arts Week 2021 Climate Change

All the children at Southwood Infant school took part in Arts week at the end of May. The children really enjoyed the creativity of the week and feel empowered to be involved in the county-wide Art project ‘Our Climate Change Forest’. The project is to help raise awareness about the climate crisis and giving the children a voice.
