Physical Education
Intent

At Southwood Infant School we believe that Physical education (P.E.) is a vital aspect of our curriculum for growing pupils’ knowledge and skills. It is important to ensure we focus on pupils’ health and wellbeing though the delivery of the P.E. curriculum. It also embodies our school values of Excellent, Enjoyment and Respect.
Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. We provide the broad and balanced programme of physical education we believe every child should have; with activities designed to be enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful and regular. Through providing positive experiences, a lifelong interest in physical activity is encouraged and this will give children the skills to succeed in their futures. We aim to provide a high quality programme designed to satisfy the needs, abilities and interests of all individual children and promotes our values – Excellence, Enjoyment and Respect.

At Southwood Infant School we aim to provide a minimum of 2 sessions of physical education a week. Each session will be at least of 40 minutes duration. The range of physical activities is wide and includes athletics, dance, games, gymnastics and outdoor education. The activities are designed to build on previous learning to ensure the consistent development of enjoyment, knowledge and skills. PE is taught by the class Teachers. Children in KS1 have been visited by Hampshire Cricket Chance to Shine Programme.
Children are made aware of how to keep themselves and others safe in lessons, when using the various spaces and equipment.
Extra Curricular
Extra-curricular opportunities are provided at Southwood. Our after school club is run by get active who play a range of sports games with the children. We also currently have running club, which is very popular with the children. YEM Theatre school also uses the school facilities where children can attend and participate in acro and dance lessons.
