Design Technology
Intent
At Southwood Infant School we aim to provide inclusive opportunities for all children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve contextual problems, considering their own and others’ ideas. We strive for our children to have a passion for this subject and aim to inspire them to be the designers and makers of our future. All children should leave our school with: the willingness to take creative risks in order to produce innovative ideas, through their design and ability to evaluate their outcome.

Implementation
Children are given the opportunity to develop their skills within units before producing a final piece. For example, with sewing in Year 1, the children would spend several lessons learning how to thread needles and perform basic stitching on old pieces of fabric first.
DT is taught for three half terms throughout the school year: one for textiles; one for food and nutrition; one for mechanisms and structures. All units build up skills over time.
Each unit follows a similar format of:
>Design criteria
>Experiment and develop skills
>Design
>Create, edit and improve
>Evaluate
